The History of Squash: From School Walls to the World Stage

Discovery Published on 18/04/2025

Squash is a thrilling racket sport, known for its intensity and technical precision. But do you know where it comes from and how it gained worldwide popularity? Here’s a summary of its evolution, from modest beginnings to global recognition.

Unexpected British Origins

Squash was born in the early 19th century in England, within the walls of the prestigious Harrow School. Students began hitting a soft ball against the walls, creating a variation of the game of rackets. The term “squash” comes from the sound of the ball squashing against the wall. Over time, this improvised game evolved into a real sport, with the first official court built in 1883.

A Rapid Global Expansion

Thanks to the influence of the British Empire, squash spread quickly to Commonwealth countries such as India, Australia, Canada, and Egypt. Private clubs emerged in major cities, and the first international competitions began. The 1980s and 90s were dominated by Pakistani legends Jahangir Khan and Jansher Khan, before Egypt rose to prominence as a true squash powerhouse.

A Sport in Constant Evolution

Over time, squash has seen many technical changes: wooden rackets have been replaced with carbon models, balls have changed in pressure, and the scoring system has been modernized. The introduction of glass courts also enabled matches to be televised, offering a better spectacle for audiences. The sport remains as intense as ever and fits modern needs perfectly: small space, indoor play, high energy expenditure, and low cost…

A Promising Future

Today, squash has millions of players worldwide. Despite several unsuccessful attempts to join the Olympic Games, it continues to grow in popularity thanks to the PSA (Professional Squash Association) and strong social media presence. With all its qualities, squash has everything it needs to attract the new generations.
